The TELC B1 Schreiben module asks you to write a semi-formal letter in response to a prompt. Most candidates fail not because their German is bad — but because they ignore the format examiners expect.
What examiners actually mark
The marking rubric awards points in three categories: Inhalt (content — did you address all bullet points?), Kommunikative Gestaltung (structure and appropriateness), and Formale Richtigkeit (grammar and vocabulary). Getting 0 on Inhalt because you missed a bullet point is the most common mistake.
The exact format
Start with the place and date (top right): Berlin, den 18. Dezember 2025. Skip a line. Add the salutation: Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, for unknown recipient, or Liebe/r [Name], for informal. Skip a line. Write your body paragraphs — one per bullet point from the prompt. End with Mit freundlichen Grüßen, (formal) or Viele Grüße, (semi-formal). Sign your name.
Address every bullet point
TELC always gives you 4 bullet points to address. Write one short paragraph per point. If you miss one, you lose a full grade band on Inhalt. Read the prompt twice, underline each bullet, and tick them off as you write.
Grammar tips that score points
Use Konjunktiv II for polite requests: Ich würde mich freuen, wenn... Use relative clauses: Das Problem, das ich erwähnen möchte, ist... Use connecting phrases between paragraphs: Außerdem, Darüber hinaus, Abschließend möchte ich...
Length
Aim for 120–150 words. Under 100 words will cost you marks on Kommunikative Gestaltung. Over 170 words wastes time you could spend checking grammar.
