How to Practice German Speaking When You Have No Partner

Speaking practice without a partner is harder — but not impossible. The right solo techniques can actually be more effective than unstructured conversation practice, because they force you to engage actively.
Shadowing
Find a native German speaker on YouTube (news anchors, podcast hosts). Play a sentence. Pause. Repeat it out loud, matching the rhythm, intonation, and speed as closely as you can. Don't worry about meaning at first — you're training your mouth to form German sounds. 10 minutes of shadowing per day improves pronunciation faster than most speaking lessons.
Record yourself
Most people hate this. Do it anyway. Record a 1-minute monologue on a TELC or Goethe topic (describe a photo, give your opinion on an issue). Play it back. You'll immediately hear the filler words, hesitations, and grammar errors that you don't notice while speaking.
AI conversation practice
SareLearn's AI coach Alex can conduct spoken practice sessions in text. More importantly, Alex gives you the kind of feedback a human conversation partner won't: specific corrections, vocabulary upgrades, and a pronunciation note at the end of each session. Use Alex for 3–4 practice conversations per week.
TELC Sprechen-specific practice
The TELC speaking section has two parts: Gemeinsam planen (planning together with a partner) and Präsentation (presenting a topic). Practice Gemeinsam planen by imagining both sides of the conversation — what would a partner say? What would you respond? Write it out, then say it. For Präsentation, pick a random topic and time yourself for exactly 2 minutes.
The 48-hour rule
Vocabulary learned through active production (speaking it out loud) is retained significantly better than passive recognition. When you encounter a new word, use it in a sentence out loud within 48 hours. This is the single fastest way to move words from short-term to long-term memory.
